The aluminum market is currently experiencing a contradictory phenomenon: large volumes of low-grade aluminum scrap remain unsold, while primary aluminum prices keep climbing sharply. This divergence is not driven by a simple overall supply shortage or surplus, but by structural mismatch between scrap grades, smelter constraints, downstream demand segmentation and global macro factors.
Most stagnant inventories are contaminated, mixed and low-purity aluminum scrap. Such materials contain impurities like iron, copper and plastics. Secondary aluminum refiners cannot directly use them for high-end production, and extra sorting & refining costs make processing uneconomical. Hence these low-grade scraps are hard to sell despite rising primary aluminum quotes.
Primary aluminum smelting is highly power-intensive. Global smelter output is capped by energy limits, emission regulations and geopolitical disruptions. Downstream industries including new energy vehicles, energy storage and thermal management need high-purity primary aluminum or well-sorted clean scrap. The tight supply of qualified metal pushes primary aluminum prices higher.
Regional conflicts disrupt energy supply and trigger partial shutdowns of overseas electrolytic aluminum plants. Reduced global primary aluminum output creates a cross-regional supply gap and lifts LME aluminum benchmark prices.
Primary aluminum generates massive carbon emissions. Carbon border mechanisms and stricter environmental rules curb new smelter capacity expansion. The limited capacity ceiling restricts output growth and supports firm aluminum prices.
New energy vehicles, battery cooling systems, photovoltaic frames and data center heat sinks require consistent high-purity aluminum. These sectors cannot adopt low-grade mixed scrap as raw material, so their robust demand only drives up primary aluminum rather than absorbing idle low-grade scrap.
Traditional casting factories remain cautious on raw material procurement. Weak terminal consumption and low profit margins make manufacturers reluctant to purchase miscellaneous scrap, resulting in slow scrap inventory turnover.
Scrap recycling, sorting and impurity removal require extra labor and equipment investment. Tighter tax and environmental compliance also increase operational costs for recyclers. Many remelters avoid buying unqualified miscellaneous scrap even when primary aluminum is expensive.
Investment sentiment in metal futures amplifies price gains. Traders bet on sustained primary aluminum supply deficit, further lifting spot and futures aluminum prices, which is decoupled from physical trading of low-grade scrap.
The coexistence of unsold aluminum scrap and surging aluminum prices mainly comes from grade segmentation. The market is flooded with unusable mixed scrap, while high-purity primary aluminum stays in shortage. Geopolitical risks, carbon policies and new-energy demand jointly push primary aluminum quotes upward. This market divergence will persist until scrap sorting infrastructure improves and downstream demand balance changes.
