It is often confusing to tell apart powder coating and polyester roll coating, as well as spray-coated surfaces and pre-coated surfaces. These two are mainstream metal surface treatment technologies, differing fundamentally in raw materials, construction principles and applicable scenarios.
Powder coating applies dry powder materials consisting of pigments, resins and functional additives to metal substrates. The coated workpieces are then heated at high temperature for curing, forming a firm and protective film. This coating features outstanding anti-corrosion performance and works well for outdoor exposure.
Polyester roll coating adopts liquid coating materials based on polyester resin, which are mixed with pigments, solvents and auxiliary agents. After being applied on metal surfaces and fully cured, the finished coating delivers great scratch resistance and chemical resistance, and is widely applied to indoor furniture and household appliances.
Powder coating requires a complete set of professional supporting equipment, including electrostatic spray guns, spray booths and curing ovens, to ensure even powder adhesion and sufficient curing temperature. Since powder construction will produce dust and waste gas, matched ventilation and filtering devices are also indispensable to keep the workshop clean and safe.
Polyester roll coating mainly relies on coating tools such as roller applicators or spray guns, together with heating and curing equipment. The coated metal materials will be sent into heating facilities to solidify the liquid coating and complete the whole processing procedure.
Powder coating stands out for superior durability and corrosion resistance, adapting to long-term service in harsh working environments. It contains no volatile solvents, so it is eco-friendly and causes little pollution. Meanwhile, it supports rich color and surface effect customization for diverse aesthetic demands. Its main drawbacks lie in high upfront investment for production lines, poor adaptability to workpieces with complex structures, and relatively high later maintenance costs.
Polyester roll coating is cost-effective with flexible operation and high construction efficiency. It can form an even coating on metal products of various shapes and sizes, and qualified products also have a long service life. In comparison, common polyester coatings have mediocre weather resistance, and harmful gas may be released during construction, which requires strict environmental protection management on site.
The choice between the two coating techniques should be determined by actual application demands, budget standards and environmental regulations. If the products require strong durability and anti-corrosion ability for outdoor use, powder coating is the better option. For projects that prioritize cost control and production efficiency, polyester roll coating is more suitable.
Spray coating and pre-coating are two common coating forming forms. We can effectively tell them apart through visual observation and hand feeling.
Spray-coated surfaces present a relatively textured finish with general uniformity and certain gloss. The overall coating thickness is thin, and tiny spray traces or fine particles can be observed visually. The edges of spray-coated parts tend to be indistinct, with occasional paint overflow and blurring.
Pre-coated surfaces feature an extremely smooth and highly uniform appearance. The coating layer is thicker, with no visible spray marks or particles. The edges are neat and clear without paint leakage or blurring, and the overall surface quality, adhesion and durability are at a higher level.
You can also distinguish the two surfaces by touching gently. Spray-coated surfaces feel rough, and you may even sense slight protrusions or depressions locally. Pre-coated surfaces are smooth and flat to the touch with consistent texture across the whole area.
Combining visual observation and hand feeling, we can accurately distinguish spray-coated surfaces from pre-coated surfaces. This simple identification method is practical for coating process selection and daily product quality inspection.
