Many buyers get confused when choosing aluminum venetian blinds. Both color coated aluminum blinds and ordinary aluminum blinds use aluminum alloy as the base material, but they show big gaps in surface treatment, weather resistance, appearance and service life. This article explains their core differences clearly for your selection.
Color coated aluminum blinds, also known as pre-painted aluminum blinds, are made of aluminum alloy slats with continuous roller coating. Common coating systems include PE polyester, SMP silicone modified polyester and PVDF fluorocarbon coating. The paint layer forms a tight protective film on the aluminum surface before slats are shaped for blinds.
Ordinary aluminum blinds are plain aluminum slats without professional organic coating. Most of them only keep the natural metallic surface or simple anodized finish. There is no integrated paint layer for UV and anti-corrosion protection.
Color coated aluminum blinds support rich custom colors, wood grain, matte and glossy finishes. The color is uniform and stable, matching modern home, office and commercial decoration styles. Ordinary aluminum blinds are limited to natural silver metallic color. Custom color options are very few, and the surface is easy to leave fingerprints and scratches.
This is the biggest gap. PVDF coated color aluminum blinds can resist strong ultraviolet rays, acid rain and salt spray, with long-term color retention for outdoor use. SMP and PE coatings are suitable for indoor and mild outdoor environments. Ordinary aluminum only has thin natural oxide film. Under long sunlight, the surface will darken, oxidize and form dark spots, especially in humid, coastal or kitchen oily environments.
The continuous coating layer of color coated aluminum slats isolates aluminum substrate from water, oil and pollutants. Oil stains and dust can be wiped off easily with soft cloth, and it is not easy to absorb dirt. Ordinary aluminum surface is porous. Grease, water marks and dirt will stick tightly, hard to clean, and scratches will accelerate oxidation.
Color coated aluminum blinds have longer service life. PE coating is widely used for interior blinds; SMP and PVDF versions are preferred for exterior sun louver, balcony and coastal projects. Ordinary aluminum blinds are more suitable for short-cycle indoor use with low UV exposure, such as temporary simple shading. It is not recommended for outdoor, kitchen and bathroom long-term use.
Color coated aluminum blinds have higher raw material and production cost because of the coil coating process. But they save later replacement and maintenance cost, better total cost performance for long-term projects. Ordinary aluminum blinds have lower upfront price, but the replacement frequency is higher under harsh conditions.
Choose PVDF color coated aluminum blinds for outdoor blinds, coastal areas and high-end commercial facades.
Choose PE / SMP color coated aluminum blinds for interior home, office, bathroom and kitchen blinds.
Choose ordinary aluminum blinds only for temporary indoor shading with low requirements on appearance and durability.
Color coated aluminum blinds and ordinary aluminum blinds share the same aluminum substrate, but the added protective coating makes color coated aluminum better in decoration, anti-UV, anti-corrosion and easy cleaning. If you pursue stable color, long service life and low maintenance, color coated aluminum blinds are the reliable choice.
