Color coated aluminum, also known as color aluminum, takes aluminum alloy as the base material and is covered with an organic coating after surface pretreatment. Unlike steel, aluminum itself does not produce red iron rust.
When bare aluminum is exposed to air, a thin, dense passive oxide film will form quickly on its surface. This natural alumina layer can block further oxidation. The paint coating on color aluminum adds an extra protective barrier on top of this oxide layer.
Common substrate alloys for color coated aluminum include 1050, 3003, 3105 and 8011. These aluminum grades have good inherent corrosion resistance for architectural, signage and decorative applications.
Rust in the general sense refers to ferric oxide, which only occurs on iron and steel materials. Color coated aluminum contains no iron element, so it will never generate red rust.
Although color aluminum cannot rust, it may suffer coating failure and aluminum substrate corrosion if the protective layer is damaged:
Scratches, cuts and perforations break the paint film
Long-term exposure to strong acid, strong alkali and salt spray coastal environment
Poor pretreatment or low-quality coating during production
Water accumulation and long-term dampness at the edge of sheets and coils
Once the coating peels off, the exposed aluminum substrate may form white powdery aluminum oxide, which is called white corrosion or aluminum powdering. It is different from steel rust, but it will affect appearance and service life.
PE coating is the conventional option for indoor and mild outdoor environments. It has decent corrosion resistance for interior panels, display boards and indoor decoration. It is not recommended for coastal high-salt areas.
SMP provides better weather resistance and anti-corrosion ability than PE. It is widely used for outdoor roofing, wall cladding and outdoor sign faces in inland regions.
PVDF is the top-grade coating for color aluminum. It features outstanding salt spray resistance, UV resistance and chemical resistance. It is the preferred choice for coastal projects and high-corrosion industrial environments.
Choose the right coating grade according to the service environment, pick PVDF for seaside areas.
Protect the surface during transportation, processing and installation to avoid deep scratches.
Seal cut edges and drilling holes with proper sealant to prevent moisture infiltration.
Clean the surface regularly with neutral detergent, avoid strong corrosive cleaners.
Select qualified suppliers with complete pretreatment and coating production process.
Color coated aluminum will NOT rust (red iron rust) because it is an aluminum alloy product without iron composition. But it is not completely corrosion-proof. Damaged paint film and severe corrosive surroundings may lead to white oxidation on the aluminum base.
