The visible surface of a cold-room panel may appear simple: a smooth white sheet that can be wiped clean. Its manufacturing job is more demanding. The coil must feed through a laminating line, bond to a foam or adhesive system, remain flat across wide panels and withstand years of humidity, cleaning and temperature cycling.

This combination makes prepainted aluminium a useful skin material for insulated panels, but it also means that a generic decorative coil is rarely enough. Ding‘ang supplies coated and embossed aluminium coil or sheet that can be developed around the customer's panel line, adhesive chemistry and service environment.

The European Coil Coating Association identifies cold stores and controlled-environment rooms as established applications for prepainted-metal sandwich panels. It also highlights the smooth finish and cleanability valued in these spaces.

Foam adhesion must be specified, not assumed

The reverse side of the skin is part of the bond line. Its pretreatment, primer or back coat can affect how well polyurethane foam or a separate adhesive adheres to the metal.

EN 13523-20 describes procedures for testing foam adhesion on an organic coating. It is a useful reference, but the panel manufacturer should still validate the material with its actual foam formulation, mixing conditions, line temperature and curing cycle. A coating that bonds well to one system may perform differently with another.

For a new project, provide Dingang with:

 foam type and supplier;

 direct foaming or adhesive lamination process;

 line temperature and cure conditions;

 required back-coat chemistry;

 target peel or adhesion method;

 ageing or humidity test required after bonding.

The agreed reverse-side specification should appear on the purchase order and certificate, not only in an email discussion.

Smooth, embossed or profiled surface?

A smooth surface is common for cleanrooms and hygienic interiors because it is easy to inspect and clean. A shallow embossed finish may be preferred for refrigerated bodies or utility areas because it adds visual texture and can make minor handling marks less obvious. Light profiling can improve panel rigidity but changes lamination and forming behaviour.

Selecting the coating for the environment

A cold room creates conditions that are different from an exterior facade. UV resistance may be secondary, while humidity, condensation, staining, cleaning chemicals and low-temperature flexibility become more important.

Useful EN 13523 test areas include:

 coating thickness and gloss;

 colour difference;

 scratch and abrasion resistance;

 resistance to staining;

 humidity and water-condensation resistance;

 foam adhesion;

 coating flexibility if the panel edge will be formed.

The buyer should supply a list of actual cleaning agents and concentrations. Do not assume that a general statement such as "chemical resistant" covers alkaline foam cleaners, disinfectants or repeated high-pressure washing.

For food-processing rooms, medical cleanrooms or direct food-contact applications, the finished-product manufacturer must identify the relevant hygiene and regulatory requirements. A standard industrial coating should not be represented as food-contact compliant without application-specific documentation.

Aluminium compared with prepainted steel skins

Both materials are widely used in sandwich panels. Aluminium may offer advantages where low weight, corrosion resistance and ease of handling are important. It can be attractive in mobile refrigeration, humid rooms and projects where edge corrosion is a concern.

Steel may provide higher stiffness at a given thickness and magnetic properties useful in some partitions. The panel designer should compare complete system performance, including impact resistance, fire classification, insulation, span, fixing method and cost. Ding‘ang's role is to supply a controlled aluminium skin once the panel maker has selected the appropriate construction.

Thickness, width and flatness

Wide laminating lines benefit from coil widths that reduce trimming and joints. At the same time, wider and thinner skins are more sensitive to handling, tension and coil shape.

The order should state:

 nominal thickness and tolerance;

 usable width and edge-trim allowance;

 coil ID, OD and maximum weight;

 acceptable edge wave and centre buckle;

 surface-defect reference standard;

 A-side and bonding-side identification;

 protective-film requirements;

 splice and joint rules, if any.

Ding’ang's coated-coil platform typically covers 3003, 3105 and other formable alloys in custom widths and coating systems. Exact availability depends on thickness, surface, colour and order volume. For a panel programme, we recommend approving a full-width production sample rather than a small hand sample alone.

The benefit is greatest when purchasing, production and quality teams agree one material standard and use it consistently across call-off orders.

Frequently asked questions

Is white the only suitable colour for cold rooms?

White and light grey are common because they reflect light and make inspection easier, but other colours can be produced for zoning, branding or architectural use. Colour choice should still consider cleaning and batch consistency.

Can protective film remain on during panel lamination?

Often yes on the visible face, but the film must tolerate line pressure and temperature. It should never cover the bonding face. Test peel behaviour after the complete production and storage cycle.

Which alloy is best for sandwich-panel skins?

3003 and 3105 are practical starting points. The final grade and temper depend on skin thickness, profiling, panel span and handling. The panel maker remains responsible for structural design.

Does aluminium make the finished panel fireproof?

No. Fire behaviour depends on the complete panel, especially the core, joints, adhesives and installation. The finished system must be assessed under the applicable product and building requirements.
