Advertising luminous characters, also known as LED channel letters, are mainstream commercial signage materials widely used in storefront logos, corporate signs, building top advertisements and urban landscape displays. The color coated aluminum strip dedicated to luminous characters is different from ordinary aluminum strips for general signage. It has strict requirements on base alloy composition and surface coating performance to adapt to bending forming, long-term outdoor exposure, LED light transmission and anti-aging needs. The selection of matched alloys and coatings directly determines the molding effect, service life and display stability of luminous characters. This article systematically elaborates on the exclusive alloy and coating standards for color coated aluminum strips specially used for advertising luminous characters.
The base alloy is the core foundation of the processing performance and structural stability of luminous character aluminum strips. Unlike rolling shutter doors and home appliance edge banding aluminum strips, luminous character production requires materials with excellent ductility, bending resistance and uniform thickness to avoid cracking, deformation and uneven splicing during slotting, bending and three-dimensional molding. The industry has formed three mature and exclusive alloy models for luminous character color coated aluminum strips, with clear application scenarios and performance advantages.
The most widely used universal alloy for luminous characters. It belongs to anti-rust aluminum alloy with a manganese content of 1.0% to 1.5%, featuring moderate hardness, super bending performance and stable chemical properties. It can withstand repeated slotting and sharp-angle bending without cracking, fully adapting to the diverse shape design of various conventional luminous characters. With good atmospheric corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness, 3003 alloy color coated aluminum strips are suitable for most indoor and ordinary outdoor advertising luminous character projects, occupying more than 80% of the mainstream market share.
It is applied for lightweight and low-demand luminous character scenarios. This pure aluminum material has extremely high ductility and smooth surface finish, enabling ultra-fine molding of small-size luminous characters and thin-border channel letters. Its surface is flat and uniform, which can ensure consistent color rendering after coating. However, due to its low hardness and weak structural stability, it is mostly used for indoor luminous signs, shopping mall guide characters and short-term commercial display characters, and is not suitable for long-term outdoor high-wind and high-corrosion environments.
A high-end special alloy for harsh outdoor environments. It adds magnesium elements on the basis of aluminum, with higher strength, toughness and ultra-strong corrosion resistance compared with 3003 alloy. It can resist salt spray erosion in coastal areas, high temperature oxidation and severe weather changes, and will not deform or fade for a long time. It is the preferred alloy for high-end outdoor luminous characters, large building top luminous signs and coastal urban advertising signage projects, meeting the ultra-long service life requirements of 8–15 years.
The surface coating of luminous character color coated aluminum strips undertakes multiple functions of color decoration, light transmission coordination, anti-UV aging and anti-fouling protection. Ordinary industrial coatings cannot meet the long-term display needs of luminous characters. According to different usage environments and durability standards, the dedicated coatings for luminous characters are mainly divided into three categories, with clear thickness and process specifications.
The basic conventional coating for indoor luminous characters. It has uniform color, good adhesion and excellent surface flatness, which can perfectly match the soft light display of indoor LED luminous characters without light reflection distortion. The standard total coating thickness (primer + topcoat) is not less than 25μm. PE coating features low cost and rich color customization, and is widely used in indoor store signs, office building indoor luminous logos and exhibition luminous display characters. Its disadvantage is weak UV resistance, so it is not suitable for long-term outdoor exposure.
A transitional high-cost performance coating for general outdoor luminous characters. On the basis of ordinary polyester, silicone components are added to greatly improve UV resistance and heat resistance. It effectively delays coating fading and pulverization under outdoor sunlight irradiation, with a standard coating thickness of more than 30μm. It balances durability and economy, and is suitable for conventional outdoor luminous characters in inland cities, meeting 5–8 years of stable outdoor use.
The top-grade coating for high-end outdoor luminous characters. With excellent weather resistance, UV resistance, chemical corrosion resistance and self-cleaning performance, it is the most stable coating for advertising luminous signage. The fluorocarbon coating has strong color retention, which can maintain consistent brightness and color of luminous characters for a long time, and is not easy to be stained with dust and rain marks. It is mandatory for high-end projects such as coastal luminous signs, super-large building top luminous characters and high-end commercial street signage, with a service life of more than 10 years.
In actual industrial production, alloys and coatings need to be scientifically matched according to application scenarios to maximize the performance of luminous characters. For indoor ordinary luminous characters, 1100 pure aluminum alloy matched with PE coating is the most economical and practical solution. For conventional outdoor civilian luminous signs, 3003 aluminum-manganese alloy with SMP modified polyester coating is the mainstream standard configuration. For high-end outdoor and coastal anti-corrosion luminous projects, 5052 aluminum-magnesium alloy paired with PVDF fluorocarbon coating is the optimal professional combination, which can fully adapt to harsh outdoor working conditions.
In summary, the color coated aluminum strips specially used for advertising luminous characters have fixed industrial matching standards for alloys and coatings. In terms of substrates, 3003 alloy is the universal mainstream choice, 1100 alloy is for indoor lightweight scenarios, and 5052 alloy is for high-end harsh environment applications. In terms of coatings, PE, SMP and PVDF coatings correspond to indoor, ordinary outdoor and high-end outdoor scenarios respectively. The exclusive matching of professional alloys and targeted coatings ensures the excellent molding performance, stable light display effect and long service life of advertising luminous characters, which is the core guarantee for high-quality luminous signage production.
