Rain gutters are core building drainage components exposed to rain, UV, temperature fluctuation and atmospheric corrosion all year round. Pure aluminum (1000 series) is too soft and easy to deform, while 2xxx/7xxx series alloys have poor outdoor anti-rust performance. Therefore, 3xxx series Al-Mn anti-corrosion aluminum alloys become the mainstream raw material for color coated gutter coils worldwide.
Common gutter dedicated alloys include 3003, 3005, 3004 and 3105. Among them, 3003 and 3005 are the two most widely used options for residential and commercial seamless gutters. This article elaborates their composition, mechanical performance, processing characteristics and applicable scenarios to help buyers select the proper alloy.
3003 is Al-Mn binary alloy without magnesium addition, the most cost-effective gutter material for ordinary building projects.
Alloy composition: 1.0%–1.5% manganese, balanced high-purity aluminum, trace copper to boost corrosion resistance
Common temper: H14, H24, H34 (balance of forming ability and rigidity)
Standard thickness for gutters: 0.4mm–0.7mm, matching K-style, half-round and box gutter roll forming machines
3005 is Al-Mn-Mg ternary alloy, optimized formula based on 3003 by adding a small amount of magnesium element to improve structural strength.
Alloy composition: Manganese + trace magnesium, higher alloy element content than 3003
Common temper: H32, H34, H26 for heavy-load drainage systems
Standard thickness for gutters: 0.5mm–0.8mm, preferred for large commercial buildings, multi-story villas and coastal areas
3004: Higher strength than 3005, used for extra-large industrial drainage troughs
3105: Medium strength, mid-cost alternative between 3003 and 3005
5005: 5xxx series marine grade, super anti-corrosion for coastal salt fog environments, higher cost
3003: Only manganese as main alloy element, no magnesium; lower alloy content, higher aluminum purity
3005: Manganese + magnesium composite strengthening system; extra Mg element enhances tensile and yield strength, slightly reduces ductility
Performance Index | 3003 Aluminum | 3005 Aluminum | Practical Gutter Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
Ultimate Tensile Strength (MPa) | 160 | 190 | 3005 resists denting under heavy snow/rain load |
Yield Strength (MPa) | 130 | 150 | 3005 gutter maintains straight shape long-term |
Elongation Rate (%) | 6.0 | 3.4 | 3003 easier to bend, roll-form complex profiles without cracking |
Brinell Hardness | 45 HB | 52 HB | 3005 surface scratch resistance better |
Fatigue Strength | Lower | Higher | 3005 suits long-term frequent water impact drainage systems |
3003 Advantage: Higher elongation, super ductile. Perfect for small-size residential gutters with complex bending, crimping and seamless roll forming; less scrap rate during production, lower requirement for forming machine pressure. Suitable for small gutter factories with ordinary forming equipment.
3005 Disadvantage: Lower ductility, stricter processing parameters. When producing ultra-narrow complex gutter profiles, pre-adjustment of forming rollers is required to avoid coating cracking during bending. Only recommended for large factories with precise numerical control forming machines.
Both alloys own excellent atmospheric anti-rust performance due to manganese element, but with subtle distinction:
Ordinary inland urban areas: 3003 and 3005 have equivalent anti-corrosion capacity, 20–30 years service life with PE/PVDF color coating
Coastal, industrial acid rain zones: 3005 with magnesium additive has slightly better salt spray resistance, less prone to white rust at bending cut edges; service life extended by 3–5 years compared with 3003 under harsh weather
3003: Lower alloy raw material cost, mainstream choice for mass residential gutter projects, stable supply and low unit price
3005: Higher magnesium alloy cost, raw material price 3%–8% higher than 3003; positioned as mid-to-high end gutter material
Low-rise residential buildings, single-family villas with conventional rainfall load
Small-batch customized gutters requiring complex bending and stamping
Budget-limited general construction projects in inland non-industrial cities
Gutter thickness below 0.6mm, lightweight seamless gutter production
Multi-story commercial buildings, shopping malls, large factory roof drainage systems
Projects located in coastal salt fog, industrial acid rain and heavy snowfall regions
Require thicker gutters (0.6mm–0.8mm) with high anti-deformation demand
Long-term service life requirement over 30 years, high-end villa drainage systems
H24 / H34 (Most Popular Universal Temper) Balanced strength and forming ability, applicable for both 3003 and 3005, covers 80% of global gutter production
H32 (Soft Semi-Hard) Better ductility, used for deep-drawn special-shaped gutters
H26 / H36 (High Hard Temper) Ultra-high rigidity, only for thick heavy-duty industrial gutters, poor bending performance
3003 and 3005 are both mature 3xxx series anti-corrosion color coated aluminum alloys for rain gutters, with no absolute good or bad, only different positioning:
3003 = Cost-effective, easy-forming standard alloy for general residential gutters
3005 = High-strength, enhanced anti-corrosion premium alloy for commercial and harsh-environment gutters
Buyers can confirm the alloy grade, temper, thickness and coating type (PE/PVDF) according to building height, local climate and project budget before placing orders to guarantee stable gutter quality and long service life.
