When selecting roofing or cladding materials for construction projects, aluminum-magnesium-manganese (AlMgMn) and color-coated steel panels are two popular choices with distinct characteristics. Both materials offer durability and versatility, but their differences in composition, performance, cost, and applications make them suitable for unique scenarios.


Aluminum-magnesium-manganese plates have good corrosion resistance because they can form a layer of aluminum oxide film with the atmosphere, making their service life up to 50 years. However, color steel plates are different. They are particularly prone to corrosion and rust in humid environments, leading to fractures.
Although the aluminum in aluminum-magnesium-manganese panels does not have an obvious yield point in terms of strength and hardness, it also contains magnesium and manganese, so it has certain strength and stiffness. On the contrary, the color steel plate has better strength and stiffness and is not easily deformed.
Aluminum-magnesium-manganese panels are lightweight,although mainly composed of aluminum, their density is only one-third that of steel.

These two building materials are usually used for roofs and exterior walls, so it is also necessary to consider their lightning protection performance. The thickness of aluminum-magnesium-manganese plate is generally 0.7mm-1.2mm, which can be directly used as a lightning protection flash device, and the lightning protection effect is good; while the thickness of color steel plate is only 0.5mm. Steel plate cannot be directly used as a lightning protection device, and other lightning protection devices are required.
The aluminum-magnesium-manganese plate is cost-effective, light in weight, waterproof, easy to bend, and has good three-dimensional visual effect, while the color steel plate is heavy in quality, poor in waterproofing, strong in rigidity and poor in bending, and the artistic effect is not as good as the aluminum-magnesium-manganese plate.
Aluminum-magnesium-manganese plate has low melting point, poor high temperature resistance, fire is easy to burn, and the fire spreads outward, which is convenient for firefighters to put out the fire, but the melting point of color steel plate is very high.
