Prepainted Aluminium Coil for Standing-Seam Roofing, Flashings and Roofline Components
The tightest fold in a roof system is often where a weak coating specification reveals itself. A coil may pass incoming visual inspection, run through the first profiling stations and then develop fine cracks during seaming. Water and dirt reach those stressed areas first, so a small production defect can become a long-term roof problem.
For standing-seam panels, profiled sheets, ridge caps, copings and flashings, the coating and aluminium substrate must be selected as one formable system. A low-slope commercial roof may also use long panels formed at the site, making feed stability and coil shape important.
Before recommending an alloy and temper, a supplier should know:
• minimum inside bend radius;
• single-lock or double-lock seam design;
• number of roll-forming stations;
• whether panels are factory- or site-formed;
• panel length and flatness expectations;
• additional punching, notching or curving;
• local wind, snow and structural design requirements.
AA3003 is a practical choice for many highly formed roof components because of its ductility and corrosion resistance. Other 3xxx and 5xxx alloys can be considered when strength or panel stiffness takes priority. Temper must be agreed together with the profile; an alloy designation without temper is incomplete.
Descriptions such as "flexible paint" or "roofing quality" are too vague for a production order. The buyer should establish how bend performance will be tested and what constitutes acceptance.
EN 13523-7 describes the T-bend method for assessing resistance to coating cracking when a coil-coated metal specimen is bent. It provides useful comparative data, but the final proof is a trial on the actual roofing profile and seaming equipment.

PVDF coating is commonly specified for demanding exterior architecture and projects with strict colour-retention requirements. The supplier must still verify that the selected coating build can tolerate the intended seam and forming sequence.
Coastal salt, industrial pollution, roof pitch, drainage, colour and maintenance access all influence the choice. A dark roof in a sunny location sees different thermal loading from a pale facade panel in a sheltered elevation.
Roofing specifications often focus entirely on the visible face. The underside can be exposed to condensation, construction moisture or contact with underlays and insulation. A defined back coat helps control this risk and supports consistent processing.
The buyer should specify back-coat type, nominal thickness, colour where relevant and compatibility with adhesives or anti-condensation layers. If the coil will be laminated, the reverse coating should be tested with the actual bonding system.
Protective film can reduce scratches during profiling, cutting, stacking and installation. It can also cause problems if its adhesion is too high, if it transfers adhesive, or if it remains on the roof during prolonged sunlight.
For each film, agree:
• which side is protected;
• peel strength range;
• forming compatibility;
• storage conditions;
• maximum outdoor exposure before removal;
• printed removal instructions, if required.
The film should be evaluated on a full production trial, particularly when roll-forming pressure is high.

1. coil identification against the purchase order and mill test certificate;
2. metal thickness and width at agreed sampling points;
3. coating thickness, colour and gloss;
4. coil shape, edge condition and winding quality;
5. T-bend or agreed deformation test;
6. adhesion and cure using the agreed method;
7. protective-film condition;
8. a short roll-forming and seam-closing test.
Retain a labelled sample from the approved batch. It gives both parties a physical reference if a later production question arises.
Aluminium has good corrosion resistance, but coastal exposure requires careful alloy, coating, detailing and maintenance decisions. Salt accumulation, cut edges, fastener compatibility and water traps should all be reviewed by the roof-system designer.
Yes, but colour coordination is more reliable when gloss, texture, coating system and master sample are also aligned. The roof and gutter may require different metal thicknesses or back coats even when the visible colour is the same.
Common causes include an overly hard temper, too-small bend radius, an inflexible or under-cured coating, excessive forming speed, damaged tools or an unsuitable relationship between metal and coating elongation.
EN 1396 covers coil-coated aluminium sheet and strip for general applications. The finished roofing system remains subject to its own product, structural, fire and installation requirements.
