| Layer | Typical Material | Main Function |
|---|---|---|
| Outer Layer | PET or PA Nylon | Provides mechanical support, surface durability and, depending on material, printability or puncture resistance. |
| Middle Layer | Solid Aluminum Foil | Provides the primary barrier against oxygen, moisture and light when foil integrity is maintained. |
| Inner Layer | PE or CPP | Provides heat sealing and the inner contact surface for suitable packaging applications. |
PET provides tensile strength, dimensional stability and a suitable outer surface for printing and handling. It helps protect the aluminum layer during converting, filling and transportation.
The solid aluminum foil layer provides strong oxygen, moisture and light protection. Barrier performance depends on foil thickness, pinhole condition, flex damage and finished package integrity.
The PE inner layer provides flexibility and heat-sealing functionality for suitable pouches and flexible packaging. PE grade, seal initiation temperature, seal pressure and dwell time should match the buyer's packaging equipment.
PET/AL/PE is suitable for many general high-barrier applications including coffee, tea, dry foods, powders, ingredients, nutritional products, industrial barrier bags and selected pharmaceutical or healthcare packaging after applicable material requirements are confirmed.
PET/AL/CPP combines a PET outer layer, aluminum foil core and cast polypropylene sealing layer. CPP provides a different sealing and temperature profile from PE and can be selected for applications where polypropylene-based sealing performance is preferred.
The exact CPP grade must be selected according to filling temperature, sealing equipment and any post-packaging thermal treatment. Standard CPP should not automatically be assumed to meet high-temperature retort requirements.
PA Nylon provides greater toughness and puncture resistance than structures relying only on a conventional PET outer layer. It can therefore be considered for vacuum packaging and products that place greater mechanical stress on the pouch.
PA/AL/PE can be evaluated for vacuum-packed foods, industrial components and other products requiring high barrier together with additional resistance to puncture and flex damage.
The required film gauge should be selected according to product weight, sharp edges, vacuum level, package size, storage environment and distribution conditions.
Solid aluminum foil can provide very strong resistance to oxygen transmission when the foil remains intact. Where oxygen barrier is a contractual requirement, specify a numerical OTR target and the applicable test conditions.
The aluminum layer provides strong protection against water vapor. Numerical WVTR requirements should be specified together with test temperature, relative humidity and applicable method where shelf-life performance is critical.
The opaque foil layer protects light-sensitive contents by preventing direct light transmission through the laminate.
The polymer outer layer helps reinforce the aluminum foil and improves handling performance during printing, lamination, pouch converting, filling, transport and storage.
PE or CPP inner layers provide heat-sealing functionality. Seal performance depends on polymer grade, temperature, pressure, dwell time, seal contamination and package design.
Three-layer foil laminates provide high barrier protection in a relatively thin flexible construction, making them suitable for rollstock, pouches, sachets, liners and protective packaging.
For products sensitive to oxidation, provide the maximum acceptable OTR together with test temperature and relative humidity. The final requirement should reflect the intended product and shelf-life target.
For moisture-sensitive products, specify the required WVTR and test conditions. Comparing barrier values measured under different conditions can produce misleading results.
Pinhole condition, cracking and flex damage can influence finished barrier performance. Applications requiring very long shelf life or demanding flex resistance should define appropriate foil and finished-package testing.
Film barrier data alone does not define complete pouch performance. Seams, valves, zippers, closures, folds and converting damage can affect the overall barrier of the finished package.
Three-layer aluminum laminates can be used for coffee, tea and similar products requiring protection against oxygen, moisture and light. Finished structure should be selected according to product type, expected shelf life and any valve or zipper requirements.
PET/AL/PE and PET/AL/CPP structures can be used for suitable snacks, nuts, powders, ingredients and other dry products requiring a high-barrier flexible package.
PA/AL/PE can be considered where vacuum packaging requires additional puncture resistance and mechanical durability. Product shape and edges should be considered when selecting total thickness.
High-temperature retort processing requires a specifically qualified laminate construction. Standard PET/AL/PE, PA/AL/PE or PET/AL/CPP should not automatically be assumed to withstand a specified retort cycle.
For retort projects, provide sterilization temperature, holding time, pressure, food composition, filling conditions and required shelf life so that compatible adhesive and sealant systems can be evaluated.
Discuss Your Packaging Application
Suitable three-layer aluminum laminates can be evaluated for pharmaceutical powders, nutritional products, healthcare sachets and other high-barrier applications where the selected substrates, adhesives and inks satisfy the required product-contact and regulatory conditions.
Foil laminates can be evaluated for selected medical or diagnostic packaging when barrier, seal, sterilization and regulatory requirements are defined by the customer.
Conventional PET/AL/PE packaging laminate should not automatically be treated as pharmaceutical blister foil. Blister lidding, tropical blister and cold-form applications use application-specific constructions that should be specified separately.
High-barrier foil laminates can be considered as liners for moisture-sensitive powders, chemicals, ingredients and other bulk products where the laminate strength, seam design and compatibility meet the filling and handling conditions.
PET/AL/PE and related structures can be converted into protective barrier bags for machinery parts, precision components and other products requiring moisture and environmental protection during storage and transportation.
Three-layer foil composite materials can be evaluated as vapor-barrier or facing layers within suitable insulation systems. Thermal insulation performance depends on the complete assembly rather than the foil laminate alone.
For chemical packaging, polymer compatibility, seal integrity, permeation, regulatory requirements and the actual chemical formulation must be reviewed before a laminate is selected.
Foil laminates can provide high moisture-barrier packaging for suitable electronics and precision components. Package construction should be selected according to storage conditions, moisture sensitivity and required sealing performance.
A conventional three-layer aluminum laminate should not automatically be described as anti-static or ESD protective. Where static-control performance is required, the laminate needs appropriate conductive, dissipative or shielding construction and measurable electrical requirements.
General flexible-packaging laminates should not automatically be used as lithium-ion pouch-cell materials. Battery pouch film requires dedicated layer design, deep-drawing capability, electrolyte resistance, electrical insulation and controlled heat-sealing performance.
| Comparison | PET / AL / PE | PET / VMPET / PE |
